Grater Vancouver Counselling and Education Society for Families was in operation from July 6, 2009 to May 1, 2018. This non-profit society (known as G.V. counselling Society) was registered under the BC Society act. G.V. Counselling Society officially ended its operation in May 1, 2018.
G.V. Counselling Society society was established upon the idea of offering specialized and culturally sensitive programs to the Farsi speaking communities across the lower mainland. Between 2009 and 2018, this Society managed to operate mainly due to volunteer work of the several counsellors while at times some federal and municipal grants helped to run projects, seminars, psycho-educational programs, and workshops.
Poran Poregbal, MA, RSW, RCC was the founder and executive director of this Society and she managed to build a counselling agency from scratch. It is important to highlight the excellent work of a group of volunteers either in role of board members and counsellors who helped the Society to be in place.
In summary, G.V. Society managed to offer approximately thousands of hours of support groups for women and youth, workshops for general and seminars for public, and psychoeducational programs such as parenting, anger management, groups and effective marriage. Over the years, society with the leadership of its executive director received three distinguished awards and numerous acknowledgments from government agencies and prominent sources. Society had the honor of participating in the in the National Victims of Crime Week in five years in a row, through which grant Society could raise awareness about victims of crime and trauma.
Early 2018 the management of the Society decided the stop the operation and all counsellors are now operating on their own in their own private practices.
To remember: G.V. Counselling Society operated for several years offering a safe clinical space to people who was leaving either abusive relationships or wanted to improve their mental health. This work could not be done in isolation and now the Society is only a history to be proud of.
